A guide to picking your bridal makeup artist

Picking your makeup artist for your wedding can feel really scary! They will be there with you for what’s likely one of the biggest days of your life and let’s not forget…you’ll have the photographs forever! Looking into booking a HMUA for your special day can feel overwhelming at first, but you’ll get there in the end.

In the meantime, here are our tips to help you pick the artist who will suit you best.

Don’t judge by social media

In 2022, social media is bigger than ever. It can be really tempting to be drawn in by large social media followings and filtered photographs. Make sure that you do a little digging behind the scenes (because followers and even likes can be bought!) and check out some real bridal shots. This will help you to see whether someone is legit and if their work is up to scratch or not and will assist you in securing a really strong MUA.

Look at reviews

Reviews are the one thing that can make or break a makeup artist. Often, people only leave reviews when they’re feeling elated about something…or if they’re feeling angry and misled. Every good bridal HUMA should have somewhere where reviews can be left – ideally on Google where they cannot be deleted or changed. If their social media page is sparkling but their reviews page is riddled with bad experiences, you’d best steer clear!

Get to know them at a trial run

A trial run is more than just a practice run for your bridal hair and makeup. It’s important that you feel really comfortable and that you can have a great time whilst creating your perfect wedding look. It’s important to us to have a good rapport with our clients – it’s supposed to be fun! At the trial you’ll spend a couple of hours with your artist, talking through ideas and beginning to see what you’ll look like on the big day. Hopefully you will come away with a feeling of ease and excitement.

Be clear about what you want

If you give your prospective makeup artist a vague or muddy brief, you may leave your trial feeling disappointed or annoyed that you don’t look the way you’d have liked. It’s really important to be completely clear with what kind of look you’d like to achieve – bring along some inspo to help your artist visualise how you’d like to look. Clear lines of communication – from both sides – will ensure there is complete trust and you feel more at ease with booking in for your big day.

We hope you find what you’re looking for!
