In this digital era, it can be surprisingly difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to choosing a hair and makeup artist for your day. There are so many beautiful Instagram grids, so many slick websites, and if you ask for recommendations on wedding forums then you’ll likely get a tonne of names thrown at you!
There are many artists out there; highly skilled, and masters of beauty and style, but no matter how amazing the work of these artists is, if your personalities don’t gel then it’s going to make for an uncomfortable wedding morning.
I don’t generally promote stalking people but I highly advise that you stalk any hair and makeup pros that you are considering using for your wedding day! While the internet has become a rather confusing place over time; with its constant marketing of new products, inspirational images, and sometimes misleading information, the advance in digital communication means that you can actually find out a lot about someone’s character and personality simply by having a snoop around google and their social media profiles.
As YouTube, Facebook lives and IGTV have become a staple method in communication for all professionals now, there is no reason why they shouldn’t have a strong presence on various online platforms. So here are my 5 top tips when
TACTIC #1 – LOOK FOR VIDEO & AUDIO
Be mindful of those sharing images and not much in the way of video or audio content to back it up. You want someone confident to look after you on such an important day, who is confident in their abilities and isn’t afraid to broadcast their thoughts and expertise to anyone who will listen.
TACTIC #2 – USE COMMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Communicate with any prospective hairstylists and makeup artists through their social media profiles by commenting and survey their response time and tone of reply.
TACTIC #3 – DON’T SIMPLY REQUEST A QUOTE
Don’t simply request a quote, ask to speak with your desired hair and makeup artist on the phone, or even better, via online video chat such as Zoom, Skype or Whatsapp video calling so that you can really get a feel for their energy levels and decide if that is the type of energy you want around you on your big day.
TACTIC #4 – FIND LEGITIMATE REVIEWS
The most trusted review websites are Google, Facebook and TrustPilot. Some wedding directories allow account holders to submit their reviews to be uploaded by the directory staff themselves so not all can be trusted and reviews on websites are uploaded by the website owner. So be mindful of the source of information.
TACTIC #5 – DON’T HOLD BACK ON QUESTIONS
Don’t hold back on questions! Ask all the questions that you need to, you’re not being difficult at all, us pros love to answer questions and share our knowledge. The more questions you ask, the more answers you will get which makes you better informed and the more confident you will feel about:
a) how it’s all going to pan out on the day.
b) your hair and makeup professional’s abilities.
So I hope these tips help you on your journey to finding the right wedding hair and makeup artist for you. If you’d like to offload some questions to me then I’d be all too happy to answer them for you on a video call or over the telephone.
